Home Robotics @ CES 2007

Presenting to you iRobiq, the latest all-in-one robot which provides education, entertainment, security and daily life management in the house, unveiled at the world’s largest technology trade show this year!
iRobiq can wake you up every morning and deliver up-to-the minute news, weather, sports, and stock market information. As an entertainment machine, it allows you to take and watch photos, videos or even sing karaoke with it. Kids will love iRobiq as it can tell preloaded stories or even dance to nursery rhymes. Coupled with a camera and wifi capabilities, the surveillance mode allows live photos to be sent via email whenever it detects human presence. Thus, fret not if you feel uncomfortable about leaving your kids or elderly at home while outside the house. iRobiq can also control other robots to perform cleaning tasks and recharges itself. iRobiq is to become an integral part of the family. Here is a video of iRobiq in action.

In my opinion, the iRobiq can be further developed to have legged locomotion to overcome the many obstacles found in a home. It should also be able to perform tasks like fetching things. Home robotics has evolved from automatic cleaning robots, to robots with voice and face recognition capabilities that can cater to the different needs of a family. What’s next? A robot that can cook us a meal; listen to our problems and give advice? The future beholds and with the rapid development in robotics, it is not that hard to imagine.

In my opinion, the iRobiq's functionalities are still very limited to what a computer can do. Like remote surveillance, entertainment, these are things that a normal PC can achieve.

Unless its robotic functions improves, like the ability to have arms and legs, it is basically a PC with a little bit of AI and it can only be used if your house is 1 storey, in which case, you may not be able to afford such a robot since it is so new in the market and bound to be super expensive.

iRobiq is indeed versatile with so many functionalities. The alarm clock, radio, cd player, diary and vacuum cleaner can probably be replaced with just one gadget -- iRobiq. I will definitely buy it if it is reasonably priced.

This iRobiq reminds me of the robot shown during the lecture by Prof Prahlad. the robots in a Korean family, still remember?

however, i don think this robot will be very popular, especially in Asia; because it may be too expensive to afford, except the Japanese perhaps.

I also agree that the functions of iRobiq is quite similar to a computer. And the part on controlling other robots to do cleaning... I have the fear that should one day iRobiq is to go haywire, it will mean a disaster in the house with all the other robots following all the wrong instructions.

But then again.. it seems like this is a risk that using any automated robot will face.

Upon watching the video clip, I must say that the iRobiq is pretty amazing with so many integrated abilities such as providing the latest news, surveillance and entertainment. However, just one question in mind is that whether an overdependence on robotic systems is a good thing? (Seeing that the family in the video clip is so dependent on the iRobiq, i think there will be drastic changes to their family lifestyle if the iRobiq is damaged one day.)

Wow this iRobiq is indeed a useful tool that can provide the user with so many functionalities. It will be good if it can be integrated with the PC to become an all-in-one robot.

As most home robotics involve cleaner robots, iRobiq is unique as it is more like an interactive entertainer/manager robot in the house. I feel that the fact that it can move around and have some form of interaction is more exciting than sitting in front of the PC. I agree that iRobiq is quite limited in functions as of now. To expect things like cooking or taking care of a person, those are much more abstract and I think it will be quite some time before we get something like that. But I think the development of iRobiq is a step in the correct direction.

With more automation and robotics in our lives next time, some form of compromise has to be reached. Technology can be a boon or bane. To imagine how the family’s life is affected if iRobiq is damaged or goes haywire, we can ask ourselves what happens if we were to lose our hand phones and laptops today. It will be drastic but life goes on. No matter how much we depend on robotics, some form of human judgment must still be reserved in our everyday life.

I have searched for the price of iRobiq and currently it is priced at USD$20,000. Quite a high price to pay if you want to keep one, but with Moore’s law, we can expect prices to go down in time. Let’s be patient! :)

I think iRobiq will be useful for reminding people of daily routines or important events. Although the issue of over-dependence on robots is apparent, I feel iRobiq would act more as a moral support and reminder for people who have intentions to keep their lives organised, but lack the motivation and discipline to do so.
